Old Grey Mare, Clifton Green, York
Barry Crux and company are pleased to advise that they have recently secured the sale of the Old Grey Mare, Clifton Green, York, on behalf of the long-standing tenant, Terry Daly. Terry has been the licensee of the Old Grey Mare for in excess of 30 years. He has therefore seen enormous changes in the licensed trade, during this time. When he took on the Old Grey Mare all those years ago the volumes of beer which were sold were quite enormous. So much so that there were two 5 gallon tanks for beer installed in the cellar, and it was not unusual for close to 20 barrels of beer to be sold every week. Sadly, that level of trading has declined massively over the 30 years, with the changes which have undergone the licensed trade, and with social habits having altered very significantly.
Over the time Terry and his wife Maxine developed the business in other directions, including providing a restaurant/dining area, and converting the upper floors to provide letting accommodation. They also converted part of an outbuilding to provide further letting rooms.
After so long working in the Old Grey Mare and in the licensed trade generally, Terry and Maxine are now looking forward to a well earned retirement, having handed over at the pub to the new Tenants, to carry out a refurbishment. We wish Terry and Maxine a very long and happy retirement, and also hope that the new tenants will enjoy a successful trading life following on in Terry’s footsteps.
