The Plough Inn, Wombleton

Getting it right – a welcoming village inn with a heady mixture of good ale, fine wine and excellent food, not forgetting warm hospitality and conversation.

Striking the balance between providing a safe haven for thirsty locals and drawing in trade with a reputation for superb cuisine is something that The Plough Inn, Wombleton has got spot on.

The English pub stirs strong emotions whether you are looking to enjoy a pint or two in the company of like-minded soles, catch up over appealing wines or search out that mouth-watering meal that you’re going to want to tell your friends about. The Plough Inn has built its ethos on such emotions and created a place with a warm welcome, quality food and drink and a certain indefinable spirit that just makes you feel at home.

Situated off the A170 about 4 miles to the east of Helmsley and 9 miles to the west of Pickering, the village of Wombleton lies between the Howardian Hills north of York and the glorious North York Moors. The Plough Inn, structurally one of the oldest buildings in the village, is cruck-framed encased and Grade II listed with part of it dating back to just before 1500.

The Plough Inn’s present owners, Christopher and Brenda Marshall, lovingly invested in major refurbishments and sympathetically restored the entire building to a high standard including a state of the art catering kitchen and a handmade oak bar. All original features were incorporated and shown off to best effect, along with log burners in the winter months creating a characterful and relaxing atmosphere.

By getting it right, The Plough Inn enjoys an excellent level of trade, both in wet and dry sales, and is well supported from the local village, local shoots and provides a community feel with regular darts and dominoes nights, quiz nights and events to support the village sports facilities. The quality of the food offering is reflected with entries in the Michelin pub guide and pride is taken over fresh ingredients and locally sourced foods. Meals can be enjoyed in the lounge bar, dining room or private dining room. A TripAdvisor score of 4.5 backs the success:

“A good traditional interior and nice to see a pub that both served good food AND was obviously part of the local community”

“The Plough is a hidden gem with massively high standards, from the friendly staff through to the food”

After announcing their retirement Christopher and Brenda Marshall have instructed Barry Crux & Company of York https://www.barrycrux.co.uk in the sale of this village gem. The Plough Inn generates extremely good gross profit margins and due to careful fitting out is very easy and economical to manage. The first floor has a two bedroom flat. The property lends itself to a continued management operation or owner/occupier operation.

As a long and well-established village inn with an ongoing, thriving business – a wonderful opportunity presents itself for a passionate new owner.

I would give all of my fame for a pot of ale and safety – William Shakespeare, Henry V, Act III, Scene II
