Landmark Headquarters on Gillygate Sold by The Salvation Army

Acting upon instructions from The Salvation Army, Barry Crux & Company has sold “The Citadel”, its historic headquarters on Gillygate, which has been home to the organisation in York since 1882.

Barry Crux & Company was asked to advise on the sale of the landmark property at the end of last year, following which preparations were made to offer it for sale in the market and for the Salvation Army to re-position itself with its various social and community based activities.

The imposing Grade II listed building, which has been used as a place of worship for over 130 years, provides a gross internal area of approximately 11,750 sq ft. The building comprises the main hall, retail shop, café, catering kitchen, offices, stores and toilet facilities to the ground floor, with galleried landing, offices, stores and nursery accommodation to the first floor.

The sale of the unique building attracted a lot of interest from a variety of occupiers due to its suitability for various uses, subject to planning consent. The property has ultimately been sold to York City Church and it is fitting that the building will continue to be used by the community as a place of worship.

Fresh Ventures for The Salvation Army in York

The Salvation Army is embarking on fresh ventures in York, following the sale of its Gillygate premises to York City Church.

Having served the community in York from their Gillygate premises for more than 130 years, The Salvation Army is continuing its vital work in three main locations. The Homelessness Intervention project co-ordinates its drop-in housing advice and referral service from Central Methodist Church, St Saviourgate, while the Ofsted-registered preschool playgroup – ‘The Groves Preschool – is now located at St Thomas with St Maurice church hall, Lowther Street. Worship, children’s work and the church’s administrative centre operates from Burton Green Primary School.

Innovative projects are being developed in partnership with the school, recently judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted, which will complement and enhance their plans to develop the school as a community hub, with extended family and community support, and further children’s activities in the coming years.

Headteacher Karen Tatham said: “I am delighted that The Salvation Army in York has become one of our key strategic partners to help transform the outcomes and opportunities available to our children and community.”

York Salvation Army corps officer (church leader) Major Andrew Dunkinson added: “Far from being a closure, The Salvation Army in York is here to stay. The sale of our premises in Gillygate has allowed us to move our services and activities into well-established communities. We look forward to developing these partnerships while beginning the work of identifying a new site on which to build for the future. The delivery of community services has changed significantly over recent years and so we anticipate building new purpose-built facilities that will provide accessible and flexible spaces that will ensure we continue to serve the people of York for many years to come.”

Despite being in temporary accommodation, The Salvation Army will continue its Christmas Toy and Food Appeal and Christmas Day lunch. Last Christmas, The Salvation Army provided Christmas presents to more than 560 local children and Christmas food parcels to almost 240 families in and around York. The church is delighted that these much-needed services will continue and, this year, its Christmas Day hospitality will be held at York Sports Club on Shipton Road.

Major Dunkinson said: “As this benefits the local community, the club has very generously offered their facilities for free and we’re pleased this partnership will benefit those who would otherwise be on their own this Christmas.”
